Not Just a Brat - Kids With Psychiatric Disorders

This is a short amount of information regarding my 12-year-old son and our experience with PANDAS (Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorder Associated with Strep).

His first strep infection was around age 5. His tics and some other behaviors such as aggression and hyperactivity began at that time.

With PANDAS, there is increased inflammation with each subsequent infection.
My son's second strep infection last September really hit hard. I'm very grateful I noticed immediately something was off and started taking steps to support his body. I'm grateful for assistance from his doctors when I requested testing, antibiotics, referrals, and other support.
As you'll see from the videos, it could be much worse. In fact, if he misses any of the supplements I have him on, his symptoms increase dramatically.

I had to pull him out of school last October due to the severity of his symptoms.
I've been able to help him recover about 70%, enough to go back to school.   We'll have a to keep a close eye on how he responds to the added stress and exposure to illnesses. He's on a natural antibiotic until age 21, as each infection can cause further damage, sometimes permanent. We'll have to take it a day at a time.

If you know of a child with psychiatric or behavior issues, PANDAS is worth looking into as a possible cause. So many children are suffering, being misdiagnosed, treated with psychiatric medication, or worse - misunderstood and mistreated by others.
Dr. Swedo, the Preeminent Principal Researcher at the National Institute for Mental Health in Bethesda, MD states that these are the steps that must be followed to treat PANDAS:
1. Treat the infection (prolonged, strong antibiotics may be required)
2. Prevent further infection (antibiotics until age 21)
3. Treat the immune response (autoimmune, IVIG, Plasmapheresis, etc.)
4. Treat the symptoms (tics, OCD, insomnia, ADHD, aggression, raging, etc.)
It's been difficult to find medical providers in Idaho that are knowledgeable about PANDAS. This has become such a severe problem that specialists throughout the US often have a 6-8 month waiting list.
Fortunately, Dr. Swedo's team is available for consult with your doctor by telephone.
After almost a year of intense research, I can be of some assistance if needed, especially if you would like to support your child's wellness with natural substances.

I'll be taking appointments at my new office later this month, but I'm available prior if necessary. I can be reached at 208-475-4500.

If you can get a referral for a nutritional consult, my services will be covered in this area by Blue Cross later this year. As time allows, I will be applying to be an approved Provider for other insurance companies.

Be Well.
